Meet Hannah - Owner of Edgie Eats Cake Shop & Café

Hey there, I'm Hannah, the creator behind Edgie Eats Cake Shop & Café. Edgie Eats is a proudly independent cake and baked goods, known for our presence at local markets, nationwide postal deliveries, and swift local service to Bath and Bristol. We've expanded our reach to over 10 outlets across Bath and Bristol, in addition to hosting regular pop-up cake stalls. And now, with the exciting debut of our new shop, which opened its doors on Saturday, March 30th, located at 12A North View in Westbury Park, we're ready to serve our community in a whole new way.

Central to this journey has been the support I received from the Bristol City Council through a Vacant Property Grant, which facilitated the transformation of an old plant shop into a fully equipped commercial kitchen.  Additionally, I secured a grant from SWEF, enabling me to furnish the shop with a customer counter, a pivotal step towards realising my dream of establishing a café. With the assistance of my family and friends, I personally oversaw the remaining renovation works. The venture is expected to employ 10 locals, including the former general manager of Spicer and Cole.

How did you get started?

I started baking during my first year of Biomedical Science studies at Bath University in 2019. As my passion for baking burgeoned during the COVID-19 pandemic, I embarked on baking endeavours, crafting 'lockdown  brownie boxes' to uplift spirits while studying and volunteering with the  NHS. The overwhelming demand for my creations fuelled my resolve to pursue baking full-time, leading me to defer a secured place for a Master's in  Paramedic Medicine.

The café, an evolution of my baking business, embodies my values of community, inclusivity, and culinary excellence. With a focus on providing a welcoming space for patrons to connect and share, Edgie Eats aims to foster a sense of belonging within the community. The café will not only serve as a culinary hub but also as an exhibition space for local artists and a venue for various community meet-ups.

What challenges have you faced with setting up the business?

My entrepreneurial journey hasn't been devoid of challenges, from navigating property acquisitions as a young female entrepreneur to overcoming health obstacles stemming from a rare hormone deficiency I've lived with since childhood. Despite setbacks and instances of being underestimated, my resilience and determination have propelled me forward.

Recognised as a finalist for multiple regional awards, including Entrepreneur of the Year and Best New Business, my unwavering commitment to my dream serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs.

What does the future hold?

Looking ahead, I envision further growth and success for Edgie Eats, with plans to continue fostering community engagement and expanding my business ventures. As I embark on this new chapter, I remain grateful for the support network that has accompanied me on my entrepreneurial journey, embodying the belief that with dedication and perseverance, anything is achievable.
